It is said that in death we find nothingness, so I would like to draw the parallel of a life of the mundane to death. The gift of consciousness is squandered when we are not experiencing life in it's entirety, so when one accepts a constant state of nothing, it very well might be the greatest tragedy. The image of sugared horrors, for me reminded me of Calaveras, which then reminded me of Dia de Muertos, the day of the dead. It comes full circle. All in all, your writing prowess has not gone unnoticed. This is literary excellence and I envy your ability to write exceptionally well. x)
