Passing Trains

by Walter   Sep 4, 2018

It was a chance encounter
We were never meant to meet
A storm which came from no where
Forced to shelter in the street

A cafe on the corner
With its awning over us
Conversation started quickly
The wild weather we'd discuss

We knew that it was pointless
With the wind and all the rain
To try and make it to the station
And catch our scheduled train

Although we saw the bright side
And both were quite relieved
That this cafe and its aroma
Was just what we both need

I ordered a cappuccino
And you a cup of tea
The warmth that this provided
Was clearly plain to see

We both just started talking
Like we were long lost friends
And never a moment awkward
Or wishing this would end

The hours passed so quickly
And the time we couldn't stop
The owner apologizing
That she had to close the shop

So we walked back to the station
One umbrella that we shared
That kept us moving closely
On this path which had us paired

And now realizing
The station within our sights
Both of our trains waiting
To an ending we should rewrite

Only time for quick goodbyes
We no longer could remain
As you reached out for my hand
I never even knew your name

While watching through the window
It was such a painful sight
When we slowly started drifting
Like ships passing in the night

    Walter,
Such an enjoyable read, about two strangers meeting and then fleeting. I like the rhyme scheme here, which flowed a warmth like your tea and cappuccino :)
    Well done, M :)
