Pretty Words

by Hannah Lizette   Sep 24, 2018

I've splattered scraps of metaphors
and strings of heartache
onto a malnourished journals ledge,
strumming thoughts of you
through the spiral of my spine.

A muse is nothing more
than an excuse to scribble lies
upon the lines of expired paper -

read between the I's and you's
and you'll see that ruby ink scars
before it fades.

My pen is engraved
with your last name,
a contract that cluttered
the punctuation of time...
left to confess that love
is just a pretty word for suicide.

*My first poem after a long hiatus from writing. Please be brutally honest in your critiques! Thank you!

This poem is not malnourished. This is the right and proper nutrition for the heart and soul of other poets. I am pretty sure judges have got their first front page win. Please Don't make this one your last. Keep on penning Hannah

Hi Hannah :-) To be brutally honest then ... this is fantastic and your long hiatus clearly hasn't dulled your poetic precision!
'Love is just a pretty word for suicide' ... that's an extremely powerful line within your excellent poem.
If this is you stretching your poetic muscles after a break, I'm really looking forward to reading what's to come! :-) x
