A Mother's Nightmare

by Maple Tree   Oct 26, 2018

Earthy damnation

upon sprinkled fantasy

leading staircase to bosom

I fathom death; shallow breath's

of speckled light

and smoky hazes of whispers

I can hear her calling atop the staircase
but Ill never reach her in time.

When nightmares become reality, I believe those are the scariest moments in which we have to live. The structure of the poem itself I believe works well here because each line is powerful by themselves, the shortness factor also works in the poems favor, the story told is a powerful one, and you did well to captivate the reader to want to keep reading more. The emotions used capture the aura of the message you wanted to send.

As I said in the first paragraph this poem seems to have you having a recurring nightmare, but that nightmare has become your reality which is why I enjoyed the first two lines here, This earth or reality has become hell to you, and although you can sprinkle a little bit of fantasy or hope in, nothing can change what you are going through currently. The staircase could refer to a staircase to a house, but in here I think it is a metaphor-

Like a stairway to heaven, and it is becoming closer to reality with someone you care for deeply. I think of someone going towards the light, a cliché but a well purposed one. You understand death because it has happened before in your life, and so this is something you are used to and not used to at the same time. No one can ever get used to it really though. This person's breath is getting more and more shallow, but there is a small hope inside of this person-

speckled lights as you say. I think my favorite line in this is the hazy whispers because this has become a hazy thing to go through, you reach out to her, and hope for the best but you feel like you wont be able to reach her in time, and not be able to save her. I felt the pain throughout the whole poem and you are brave for writing this.
