An Echo, A Sign

by D.   Dec 27, 2018

I smoke.

As it billows from
my lungs; stains the
back of my teeth

it reminds me of
death - chimney tops
choking in thickest
smog - grandmother
coughing in a hospital
bed.

I drink.

As the ember stirs
in my throat, races
through my blood,

it reminds me of death -
shattered bottles, park
benches - bruised wrists,
homes turned upside down,
a stammering child:
“where is father?”

I love.

As far as the flame
burns to the bottom of
the wick,

I remember death - no
shelter amongst the trees
we carved our names -
you made like the Autumn
leaves, but you are no
longer to blame.

I live,

and it reminds me
of death.

I adore this piece, it has a strong message and the flow was just perfect especially with the closing line. The way you weaved thru the physical and emotional aspect was great. It was a pleasure reading it and glad that you joined this site. :-)

Love all of your new pieces. I feel like they all flow wonderfully and all are coming from similar emotions. Can't wait to keep reading more. I specifically like how this one each action is broken into it's own part but all of it blends together perfectly

great poem Daniel, i love your writing style, very stripped back and to the point. Every word earns its spot in your poem. As for the first two parts of you poem? I have managed to kick them both into touch a few years back.

A very personal piece Daniel, with much imagery for one to sink into. So well written about how life is and how it can affect us.

    Nicely done, M :)
