Mirror

by Tanya Southey   Jan 16, 2019

Give up looking
in the mirror,
hardened glass
of expectations

Give up judging
your own reflection,
the flat version
of yourself,
the version that does
not celebrate your
robust and real beauty

Let go of the version
that sees the lines
of criticism carved within.
Your childhood
sun-worshipping self
now etched with lines
would rather look into the eyes
of unconditional affection

Steam the mirror,
shatter the glass,
create a fog if you must

Do your hair in the wind,
lift your face to the sun,
see your strength in
the trees, know that
you are a reflection of love

A victorious poem about self-love, embracing your strengths instead of sinking to the faults we always focus too much on. Enjoyed this immensely, especially the final images of not being ashamed, head down, and instead knowing we have that breathtaking capacity to love and be loved. <3

Yes, the 3D, real life version is so much more profound, isn't it?

    Love this.

It sure is a better version! Anyhow, age will humble us all :)

Love this! It is so true! Seeing our own reflection can be so damaging.

Damaging either way, creates either arrogance or despair :)
