A Very Colorful Moth

by Adreamer   Feb 24, 2019

Perhaps if I had wished you godspeed
or, at the very least, wellness
on my final day in that class
sitting next to you, you would have
found me again when we were older

in a new city or time.

And even though I'll always wonder if
I could have saved you I still understand
the desire moths have to willingly burn
themselves alive for the brightest flames

once they feel they have seen
every shade of light
this world has to offer.

I love the image you conjure here of a moth - drab, perhaps, in life - but not once they fly headlong (willingly) into a flame. We've all seen it: the flame suddenly is injected with a new passion - it burns with such vivid intensity. But only briefly, and then it is gone again. I suppose any 'moth' having been part of that would never find much to live for again. They had burnt the brightest, felt - at last - such intense life (if only momentarily) that they had soaked up everything worth having in this drab world.
No butterfly ever gets that colourful.

    Take care, Maddy.
