My, brother, my friend (English sonnet)

by Michael   Feb 28, 2019

The times we had and stories that we shared,
when I did almost drown in waters deep.
I knew you were the one that really cared
You’d always guide me down from mountains steep.
You always searched a way out to the light;
and help me seek out where the tunnel ends.
You’d say that life was neither black or white
and sharing always helped to make amends.
You fought for justice in the halls of court
but sadly came the writing on the wall.
The hardest fight for you became so fraught
this was to be your cruellest case of all.
My brother now in peace I hope you rest
so sad am I the worse did come out best.

*This is dedicated to my brother-in-law but was like
a brother to me, who with great sorrow passed away yesterday.
A fine gent, lawyer, father and friend. rest in peace Steve*
