Wizened Treasures

by Larry Chamberlin   Apr 18, 2019

The dry air pulls my breath eastward
where desert calls in earnest yearning
with steps made seeming wayward
longing to feel arid sand burning.

Let temples buried below be revealed
eons in hiding make it ripe for plunder
millenary treasures tightly sealed
give up secrets of this barren wonder.

I’d understand your wisdom and your guile
even the treachery of your olden hearts,
the rich drama of your lives along the Nile
your ancient lore, beliefs, and arcane arts.

When shown under blazing sun above
hieroglyphs speak silently the mystery
guiding dead through the afterlife to love
and the deeds of Ramesses and Ptolemy

and where are you oh Cleopatra seven
entombed with Marc Anthony in the north
did you ascend with him into the heaven,
did you find Caesar as you went forth?

The wasteland beckons me for adventure
this desiccated African sidhe I must enter.
