The Drunk Driver

by Johnny Marlin 2   Jan 31, 2005

A quarter past two
On your typical night
A few too many beers
But fine was his sight

So he stepped in the car
To take a drive home
Smiled as he passed
The new stadium dome

But I'm sorry to say
That smile was his last
His family now remembers him
Only in the past

He wasn't an alcoholic
Nor was he a drunk
When his wife got the call
Her heart only sunk

He was a man of twenty-one
Would never drink and drive
But had he stuck to that rule
He would still be alive

He'd be able to see his wife
His young baby boy
The smile identical to his
That brought him so much joy

But he's now with god
Looking down from above
A man of twenty-one
Separated from his love

I currently work for a tele-fundraising company that has been raising money for Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD). That is what inspired this poem. It is not true, at least not to my personal life.

It's hard for some people to write about things that haven't happened to them and still seem emotional with it you pulled it off. Excellent job. >3jess

Good message but very simplistic. I've seen lots of poems like this, and it didn't seem to be particularily strong.
