Vanitas

by FTS Miles   Feb 28, 2005

Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas!

Mansions and malls,
stock options and SUVs,
credit cards and liposuctions,
cell phones and PDAs,
breast enlargements and
penis enhancements…

Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas!

Within mighty temples of
concrete, steel, and glass
have we erected new gods
of Corporation and Industry,
Televangellusion and Apathy,
Commercialism and Spin.

Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas!

Upon our back-braces
and carpotunnel,
ulcers and heart-disease
do we worship these
false idols of electronica,
and in so doing have
made of ourselves the
Gods’ devout madmen.

Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas!

Yea, verily has all become
vanity and vexation of spirit.

Vanity, yes, a flaw in humanity that we often don't think much of. Why should we care so much on enhancing what we look like, when God made us the way we are, and to others, it's perfect? It's suprising, though, the amount of talk I hear in school about teenagers succuming to the pressure of looking flawless. And everyone enforcing it.

Ok, well, enough of my thought processing. I think your poem made a strong point and the repetition of "Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas!" definetely gave an edge, it made the poem that little bit more creative and excellent.

Poets like you definetely deserve the praise given; true talent, I only aspire to hold at least half the talent as people like you do.

Ok, well, overall, well done! 5/5!

    Tellivangellusion and Apathy.

Great spin on things and the two go together so well.

I would say great. excellent etc, but you know I know that already.

I suppose I should have included a translation... my apologies.

"Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas" is from Ecclesiastes: "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity."

I see why you interpreted stanza 2 as you did, but it was most definitely meant to be a statement not a question. ;)
