I Was Alone

by Tom Watkins   May 11, 2005

I was alone.
Standing in defiance
Against a supercilious world which spurned me.
I was alone.
A nomadic outcast
Emblazoned upon the shield of my innocence.
I was alone.
Embattled by demons,
Bent on the destruction of my fortifications.
I was alone.
Facing daunting numbers,
Gathered safely beyond the range of my arrows.
I was alone.
So why did they not charge,
And descend upon me like ants on discarded food.
I was alone.
Hopelessly outnumbered,
I would have been fodder for Lucifer’s minions.
I was alone.
Yet they kept their distance,
As if unable to breach a lone man’s defenses.
I was alone,
To a skeptical eye,
Unable to view the Angelic legion of God.
I was alone,
To those who cannot see
The blessings of Christ that shield us with salvation.
I was alone
Before a blind planet,
Bereft of the vision to perceive my bodyguards.
I was alone
Before their hardened hearts,
Refusing to hear the message I’ve tried to share.
“I am NOT alone.”
