Persistent Silence

by Dorotea©   May 31, 2005

The persistent silence overwhelmed
One heart among many others
The refusal to speak words of truth
In this culture thought uncouth
Gave birth to rebellious minds.

Strong yet hidden grows the reverence
For intense hearts that do not hush
The now silent revolt shall be heard
By those who quiet preferred
And the will of truth shall grow.

The fallacies those minds had lived in
Strove for misguided perfection
Each spoken word weighed heavy with law
To find each thought with a flaw
Thus a culture built on lies.

Yet rules are abandoned to high wish
When voices rise above deceit
When each reflects their yearning for peace
And opinions they release
Fight the persistent silence.

I had a lot of fun reading this piece, especially because of the ending line. As a perogative, it directly commands the reader to fight silence, and that sounds like a very fun thing to do. I've always found it interesting to read through the comments ahead of mine to see what people draw out of your poetry. I was thinking more along the lines of a political and social stangnation, like in Eastern Bloc countries and the People's Republic of China and all that. but I see that people have taken it lots of different ways, like Kevin Murray and bob shank. I think good writes can get a main message across while also playing to individual interpretations, and this did just that.
