Where is God?

by Vanessa Lea   Jun 20, 2005

Tell me 'God loves everyone'
You're lying to yourself the answer is clear
Just look around and you'll see
That god is not found here

If God exists, then tell me this
What kind of god would bring a child into a life of death?
The only aim to live a while
Until fading to their rest

What kind of god would wage drought
On a country already poor
And let the people fall like dominoes
Onto the cracked desert floor

I KNOW YOU"LL TRY TO TELL ME GOD EXISTS,
IT'S JUST THAT WE HAVE FREE CHOICE

Point out the choice of a baby
Born into a house of AIDS
The tiny body a ticking time-bomb
Until the heartbeat fades

Where was god when the two-year old
Was shot and fell to the ground
I'll say it now as I have before
God was not around

Did God go on holidays
When the little black girl was raped
By three white men she didn't know
Who did it because of her race?

Was God talking on the phone
When the bad man broke into the house
And murdered a nine-year old
Took her life as quietly as a mouse?

Was He taking a nap
When that drive-by happened last night?
Or was he in the shower
When a man killed another out of spite?

Didn't God notice
A child born with a disease?
Why do you think he is so great?
Can you answer my questions for me please?

I QUITE AWARE THAT I'LL BE INFORMED
THAT WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG
THE OH-SO-WONDERFUL GOD IS TESTING ME

Was God testing the parents
Of a infant dead from cot death?
Maybe they did something wrong
But should it mean the childs last breath?

Was God testing 100,000 people
When a giant wave sped up their shore?
Was He testing all the people
Who fell into a crevice an earthquake tore?

We may have free choice
When it comes to our personal lives
But where is the God for the innocent?
Who have no-one to help in their plight.

As someone who has only recently begun to discover my faith (seriously, I only decided to get baptised last night haha) I completely understand where you're coming from. I ask myself this question all the time and there are a million things people will tell you such as, "how would we know true happiness without true despair?" But I still have difficulties with this whole issue. I think writing a poem about your beliefs is really difficult to do, especially when you feel as passionately as you do, mine always come out garbled and un-structured and generally don't make too much sense. Good job once again!

Very heartfelt comments. I tend to sit on the fence with such arguments but expressed yourself well. The poem had great flow and did't lose tempo despite the length. I liked the use of capitals in 2 of the stanzas, it really came over as you shouting.

Right now, I am kind of iffy on the whole God thing. I def. agree with your piece. Where was he? I wrote a poem like this not too long ago. I didn't post it though. Good job....
