Two Trees

by Justin Groft   Aug 25, 2005

Above a cheaply plateaued landscape
of dime-a-dozen evergreens
stands two illuminated beings
one pretentiously lounges in its rite
the other graciouslessly in its own
they grasp where the others fail to reach
the owned lot of a love so fierce
it burned boundless craters where its ashes fell
like mated cigarettes forever ignited
passion throbs within their picturesque might
they have spent damn near one thousand years
waiting to hold each other atop this mountain
refusing to cease their growth, when it all seems so close
their branches yearn for the others, lonely limbs of hope
they reach under the storms, under god, under stars,
under every agonizing movement of quicker affairs
their tears fall like rain, feeding their gnarled roots
allowing them to close the distance, slow inch by infinite inch
but theyll lose their fight with love to life
and suburban sprouts of ivy growth will drown their bodies
and when their beautiful corpses fall to the forest floor
rings of growth will mark
the years of their hopeless engagement
and in the midst of their destruction,
their branches will finally reach
and all will be lost, where all is forever, and all is forgiven
