Through The Eyes Of A Firefighter

by Peter DeJesse   Jan 1, 2006

Dark smoke fills the sky
The stench of death is in the air
Crawling down a smoky hallway
Searching for somebody who may not be there

The heat from the fire seeps through me
Sapping the energy from my being
Must find the strength to carry on
Total blackness is all I'm seeing

I check each room I pass
Searching for anyone alive
Feeling around in darkness
Asking myself , How can anyone survive?

A firefighter's job is rescue
Sometimes we do succeed
I yell out, "Is anyone in here?"
I hear a small groan, that's all I need

The sound directs me to a bedroom
Where someone is close to dying
Found two kids in the closet
"Please help us", they're crying

With adrenaline pumping through me
I carry both from the hell they're in
I see that they both have burns
Doctors will need to graft some skin

At least they're alive and crying
That's always a good sign
Sometimes kids don't make it
Which weighs heavy on my mind

Saving people from death's door
So that they can live another day
It's what a firefighter is trained to do
And they do it each and every day
