Game of Cards

Anywhere as long as I'm with you,
The boy said to his girl,
She listened through her phone smiling,
He was her world.

Her friends and family,
Slowly became second in her life,
And secretly in her dreams,
She longed to be his wife.

As the days grew to months,
And months felt like years,
She fell in love,
And him gone was her fear.

There were very good times,
Along with the bad,
Then the bad times came more frequent,
It always left her sad.

He said things that hurt,
Things that broke her heart,
She didn't want to admit it,
But she felt something wrong from the start.

She had a feeling you see,
That struck her when he said "yes",
But she chose to ignore it,
She didn't know it was her conscious.

He was sweet as a boy could be,
But sometimes things felt wrong,
"Welcome To My Life" he'd say,
And then he'd quote the song.

"On the verge of breaking down and no one's there to save you,
No you don't know what it's like,
Welcome to my life"

He would ask her stupid questions,
Of who and why and how?
Questions she felt didn't need to be asked,
If only she could go back now.

He accused her of using him,
Because of an event 4 years ago,
She felt heartbroken and hurt,
She would never use him, and he didn't even know.

Then one night he hurt her again,
Like many times before,
She was tired of his promises,
Her heart couldn't take it anymore.

She turned angry and bitter,
Then he did the same,
It was always like that with him,
It was always a game.

Everything for him was revenge or giving back,
For both the good and the bad,
Because if you hurt him,
He'll be sure to make you sad.

So the day after it all ended,
And the girl had nothing much left,
She lay awake for hours,
And in her bed she wept.

She told her friends the news,
They said sorry and just stared,
It didn't seem to phase them,
They didn't seem to care.

It serves me right she thought,
I should have never turned away,
I should have stuck with my friends,
Instead of living in fear from day to day.

She felt so stupid,
Letting the boys love blind her,
She'd give anything to go back,
Back to how things were.

But she admitted her mistake,
And she accepted that she needed to earn their trust again,
So she swore to herself,
That her friends would come before any man.

It's hard for her though,
She loves and she loves hard,
And somehow she always loses,
Like in a game of cards.

But you learn and you live,
Have faith that another guy will come along,
That your true friends will forgive you,
That you'll be OK and carry on.
