My Paper Heart

by Just Sierra   Apr 2, 2006

I once drew a perfect picture
That matched my lovely heart
And I handed you the drawing
Since it was yours from the start.

And I stood there with a smile
That slowly turned to pain
As you ripped my paper heart in half
Without trying to explain.

And you walked away for a while,
And I believed it to be a mistake,
For the love of my life would never
Leave my paper heart to break.

Yet somehow you did it to me
And tears fell down from my eyes
And as I looked into the mirror
I found myself hard to recognize.

It was my mistake to draw that heart
A perfect picture of my own
But it was your mistake to break it
And turn my heart to stone.

It took even longer to recover
Until I found you once again
And I glued my heart together
And placed it back beneath my skin.

I guess it was my protection
Even though the pain never ceases.
Until I fell so hard once more
And my paper heart was ripped in pieces.

Like broken glass, I tried so carefully
To mend back what you've broken
So I sliced the skin to get the pieces
And left my disappointment unspoken.

I watched you from the distance
As you fell in love with someone better.
Meanwhile, I tried to ignore the pain
And somehow put this life together.

So I drew you another paper heart
A black heart that you matched
And I stood by and watched you give her
A new heart you've never scratched.

And I knew just where you got it
You gave her the heart that I desire
Not made of paper, but of steel
So I threw my heart in the fire.

I watched it burn and shrivel
And it finally hit me in your scheming glare
That I could draw you another heart
That would finally make you care.

So this time, I dropped the pencil
And this time I grabbed a knife
And I sat you down and made you watch
As I began to take my life.

I looked back on my broken heart
As tears washed away the ink,
Redeeming myself at last of the chance
To die the way we think.

I held your hand as you looked at her
And blood fell on the floor
I took the knife and saw you smile
And I carved a little more.

Just looking at your hoping smile
My body began to shake
I said out loud, in a dying whisper,
"Here's a heart you can't break".

I am halfway torn. On one side, I wish that I had never read this poem because it pulls memories out of the shadows that don't belong no where else. On the other side, I love it. I loved the word choice, the flow, just everything. Thank you for sharing.
