Some Prayers Are Answered With A "No."

It has been fourteen years,
Since that cold December day.
Eighteen days before Christmas,
Is when you had to go away.

I know it was your time to go,
But I really didn't want you to.
You were my favorite person,
And I really loved you.

But you endured so much pain,
While trying to gain more time.
Paralyzed from the waist down,
You had only your arms to climb.

You could barely move,
And yet, you didn't complain at all.
You weren't even resentful,
That you could no longer stand tall.

You didn't sleep for an entire week,
knowing your time was short.
We visited you as often as possible,
Trying to be there for support.

I'm sorry you didn't get your last wish,
To see us open our presents from you.
Grandpa wouldn't let us stay,
He told us that it was time to go.

They were lovely gifts,
Bringing a smile to my face.
They were gifts from your heart,
Gifts no one could ever replace.

A few hours after we opened them,
Mom got that phone call.
We knew what it was about,
Because it almost made her fall.

Minutes later, we were in your room,
Faces stained with tears.
Standing in silence,
While facing our fears.

Even though it's been so long,
That image is still in my head.
I see your cold and pale body,
Lying lifeless on that hospital bed.

Our prayers were answered,
But the answer was no...
God wouldn't let you stay,
It was your time to go...
