Unopened Envelope

by Jessica   Sep 23, 2006

A white envelope lies silently beneath the empty bed
Containing a long letter, a letter that can never be seen
The reasons why from this awful life she silently fled
Leaving her body cold, at the delicate age of sixteen..

Letting out everything that was painfully held within
A letter that was meant to be sent, but did not have time
Because instead, the darkness within her gleefully did win
Pulling her into a black hole, slowly fading into the grime..

All the pain that her tender soul felt, never to be discovered
For everything that explains it, lies beneath an unmade bed
Stealthily hidden away, by dust, pain, and guilt it's covered
Her years struggling in hell, all lay in an envelope unread..

This was a trully sad poem. The story had such an impact on me. Secrets are a bad thing to keep. The flow and rhythm was flawless, and the imagery great. Well done.

    Thanks for entering my contest.

It wasn't much a sad poem as it was a short story in a way. I did like the idea about the secrets being in an unread letter, kind of how we keep secrets inside we wish to share but do not feel safe to.
