Material Life

by Espoirfailed   Dec 12, 2006

Some things that mean so little to us,
Are of great importance to them.
Our materialistic life
Is selfish compared to their strife.

While we complain the new TV is too small,
They’re fighting over
Who'll have the old one
Under half its size.

The look of elated ecstasy on his face,
Was nothing I'd ever seen before,
His wife and kids will be so amazed about
The old DVD player that we threw out.

We sit and think about what luxuries
We will choose next.
He wonders how he'll earn enough,
To buy his family all sorts of stuff.

We whine if we don't get everything.
His wife sits and silently cries,
Because she knows the kids are hungry
No matter how hard she tries.

While we dream of money,
Unnecessary amounts.
He dreams of being able to afford
Enough food to go round.

And we like to pity them,
Since it makes us feel better.
But what good are we doing?
Saying we feel sorry for the beggar.

And the strange truth is,
We think we need expenses to be happy.
But what difference does the model of the car make,
It still does the same job, with an engine and a brake.

And if all we ever aim for
Is more money than we need.
While there are people out there
Dieing to have feed.

What does that make our life?
What does that make us?
Why are we so selfish?
Why is money such a fuss?

I absolutely love this, it`s a lot different than all of the other poems of yours that I have read, but still good nonetheless. I love reading poems about real world issues, and this was one of those poems where a reader can just get lost in what you are saying. Good job.

I enjoyed this poem as it looks at Consumerism and Materialism from a different and fresh perspective. I particularly liked this verse as it encapsulates the meaning of the poem and at the same time is poignant but witty:

    the strange truth is,
We think we need expenses to be happy.
But what difference does the model of the car make,
It still does the same job, with an engine and a brake.
