The Umbra

by Janette Bradley   Oct 5, 2007

When I feel the darkness
Envelop me,
And I suffer the impression
Of utter loneliness
With the world
Turned against me,
Determined to
Beat me down.
My soul screams out
In agony!
Begging to be released
From these shackles!
My heart beats wildly,
Trying to break free of its cage.
What can I do
When I feel myself
Consumed by the umbra?

I close my eyes,
Become the umbra
And experience
The intensification
Of the sensation.
But then, I focus
On the one positive
In my life of uncertainties.
The face of the one
Whose smile can reach
As far as his eyes,
The one who has
Shown me the way.
I then realise
That if I am the umbra,
And am therefore
Surrounded by the darkness,
I need only find the strength
Within me
To master the night
And thus, be content
And be the umbra.

I personally do not know what the umbra is but you made me feel like I did. I love it.
