I Never Fell

by Anon   Jan 15, 2008

It's funny, standing here
The wind blowing through my hair
The gulls circling, cawing at nothing

I stand there and wonder,
Can I do it? Can I fall?
Can I end it all now and taste sweet oblivion?

Rejection. Such an easy word to say
So hard for the recipient.
Why don't I fit in?

The anguish of loss, it's too much to bear
I step even closer to the edge
And gaze down at the waves, breaking upon the rocks

But wait. A memory of joy
And another. And another
A friends smile, the taste of cool water on parched lips

And strangely, it's not so bad anymore
You only get one shot at this kid
Make it count

I step away, life coursing through my veins
Away from the edge, away from death
I never fell.
