Nearly Almost

by N J Thornton   Jan 23, 2008

I glanced at the clock,
it was nearly that moment again,
that odd time of day;
too early to end something,
yet, too late to begin something new.
It was almost that time.

The hands were slowly
but constantly making their way
into place, as if they were
expecting the whole world to give
a standing ovation.
But, I disregarded it.

I sat still, and watched it
come and go.
I didn't feel anything.
I knew now there must be three dozen
more souls and one dozen less.
Yet, I was indifferent.

I looked as the fingers ticked
to 3.01, and it was then
I realised - I was alone.
All alone, and my last conversation
was nearly three months ago
and it was almost nine weeks since
he left me.

This is one of the best pieces I've read lately. You really have a knack for piecing words together in interesting new ways in your free verse, while flowing and keeping the reader enthralled. Your work (that I have read thus far) really has an enigmatic sense to it. Lovely lovely.

Oh how often I've felt like that.
    Great work.
