On The Rocks

by N J Thornton   Jan 23, 2008

I heard ringing
somewhere in the distance.
I felt like I was stranded
on the rocks and the life-guard-boat
had come checking for survivors.

It sounded closer and I knew
I should raise my hand
and signal my life (away)
but my limbs had become
the rocks; I couldn't move.

I tried to cry for help,
but my mouth could only
let air past it's lips;
not a single vibration.

Then the ringing stopped.
I held my breath,
for so long that I saw an
ivory light began to cloak
my vision. It flickered,
and waved it's brilliance
over my body.

I heard the ringing again,
and saw the boat, crowded with
ambivalent survivors,
who were found clinging to the rocks.
Just like me.
