Week[ends]

by Poet on the Piano   Sep 19, 2014

Lick cinnamon and sugar off fingertips,
finish off the weak pot of coffee,
be ready with toothbrush so
others don't glance at you and think

-stained-

Get dressed. Fold up snowflake pajamas.
Wear silence around your neck like a scarf
and don't you dare shiver,

just because it's almost a new season.

You must say goodbye to Mother.
Brother won't miss you, his snores
grizzly and rumbling through walls.

Go to class and act/act/act
until you've become so well-rehearsed
in being invisible that you almost believe
you don't

exist.

Maryanne, This poem really touched my heart well. The simplistic flow to this is well written.

First: The imagery here is so vivid, you did an excellent job with it. I like personally how you said weak instead of week. To me that could be interpreted as it was barely enough to get you through the weekday. Or that day in particular. The last line here is interesting. You don't want your teeth to look stained so that tells me you or this character drinks a ton of coffee and the self image of this person is low, because they will feel judged by people around them, no matter who they are.

Second: Again here the imagery is simplistic but wonderful. The pajamas tell me that it is getting colder where you or this character lives, so you need them more often. I love the personal touch of snow flakes though... That might mean that they are your favorite pair or that could be a metaphor for winter time coming soon! The scarf hides your fear or nerves about leaving.

Third: You will miss your mother, because it seems like you probably had a good relationship. And that's the place you felt safe. Your brother is a grizzly which is well worded for hibernation (if that's where you were going with this.) I love the choppy flow of this, it's really almost like you used stark to get your message across. Very clever.

Ending: This is where it all comes together for me. It's school that you are nervous but excited about and you feel that since you left the comfort of your home, you will feel lost. And like a shadow almost. You will feel like you are in a routine and get stuck there. My favorite from you so far! 5.
