Lives of Others (sonnet)

by Larry Chamberlin   Nov 16, 2014

All the week petitioners importune
with these people's problems my life is strewn
beyond breaking, past howling at the moon;
filling my ears and loading my senses
overwrite my own experiences
leaving me theirs, mere cuckoo pretenses;
forced to seek solace hidden by a screen
sucking all this misery from my spleen.

Come to me now children, my cares allay
bring me your toys and unwritten essay
let us work your puzzles and thus outweigh
these words to strangers too oft' unheeded
then I'll know that more of me is needed
so through your smiles life will have succeeded.

    Often what we feel about our reflections is not how others see us. Most people don't choose to listen and I believe that is where this metaphor takes part, at least in the first stanza. Interestingly enough I find that writing about experiences help others in a way they do not realize it now. But this seems to be self sacrificing your happiness for others, which is ironic in itself for self explanatory reasons. But too often the wisest words are left unheard because no one tends to listen. It's justified because that's the world we live in nowadays, everyone is in a rush. I do like how you make yourself out to be a story teller here. Clever write sir. Nominated. Good luck 5/5.
