Standing in the Trenches Such a horrible sight Watching people fall in the mud Even when they put up a fight Suddenly I hear a bang Something flies over my head I hear a scream and turn around Someone has fallen to the ground Oh no! It's Bill, my old friend I run over to where he lay Blood splatters on the ground His body has been found They bury his body And then, what a sight! A poppy springs up With all it's might! I feel slightly comforted, For that single poppy has shown, That some can flourish, In the battle that has grown A year goes by and it doesn't end, It's driven us all around the bend Good things no longer come, Maybe tomorrow will be our friend.

Your poem captures the feel of the trenches My favourite part - Blood splatters on the ground His body has been found
