The Trenches

by Megan   Feb 28, 2016

Standing in the Trenches
Such a horrible sight
Watching people fall in the mud
Even when they put up a fight

Suddenly I hear a bang
Something flies over my head
I hear a scream and turn around
Someone has fallen to the ground

Oh no! It's Bill, my old friend
I run over to where he lay
Blood splatters on the ground
His body has been found

They bury his body
And then, what a sight!
A poppy springs up
With all it's might!

I feel slightly comforted,
For that single poppy has shown,
That some can flourish,
In the battle that has grown

A year goes by and it doesn't end,
It's driven us all around the bend
Good things no longer come,
Maybe tomorrow will be our friend.
