Changes

by Brenda   Mar 6, 2016

I tried to change you
into the man
I thought you
should be-
I saw potential,
I saw success.
Ignoring the red flags
flapping dangerously near
I entered into
this union
still bent
on making those changes
confident in my abilities,
I got this...
Um, yeah....
NO!
You fought me
at every turn,
you made my life hell,
you did
as you pleased
I swear
just to spite me!
The more I pulled,
the more you pushed
me away
my dreams
of you becoming
the man
I thought
you should be
shattering
like fine china
being thrown against
a wall.
You were quite
content
in the hell
you produced,
happy with your
loser friends
and their
partying ways-
nothing or nobody
especially me
was going
to change that!
In the end
I walked away
broken, defeated,
a shell of my
former self-
So, who changed who?

Your poetry makes me think... I love that!

Lessons learned within relationships can be such a hardship, but to change another should only be positive changes and not to seek benefits for personal needs... this poem is powerful!

Thank-you Andrea! Yeah, learning is growing and only when you learn can you really grow. He and I were never meant to be, but I don't allow this to ruin me. It was a chapter in my life and I definitely learned from it.

Michael, I guess human nature is for us to attempt to control and bend our partners. Just like you I tend to be hard headed, it took a lot of growing and failed marriages to, pardon the pun, change the way I dealt with things. I'm glad you can relate. Thanks! Brenda

    Hi Brenda,

I used to imprint my ideals onto my partners. I would try and mould them to my vision. In my experience a person is basically themselves and we cant and shouldnt try to change them. We are only asking for trouble if we attempt to change the unchangable.

I totally relate... learning the hard way - thats me! Lol

    Take care,

    Michael
