You Told Me To Be Happy

by Jason   Apr 19, 2016

The sirens wailed outside
As the onlookers cried
Out in grief and pain.
A mother and father
Lamenting at the scene
Laid before them...
You told me to be happy...
The paramedics came and went,
Covering the lifeless body
That lay before all
Like a centerpiece to
The saddest play
Ever written.
You told me to be happy...
The news reached the ears
Of the girl he was in love with,
The one who never knew
Of the despondent thoughts
That ran through his mind.
You told me to be happy...
Her wails carried on
Like the most sorrowful song,
Screaming aloud, "What happened
To make you like this?
Why did you put the gun
To your head and
Pull the trigger?
Why didn't you tell me
That you were hurting so much?"
She cried on for hours on end,
Until she finally passed out
And into unsteady dreams.
It was there that she saw
The man who's heart she held.
I tried to tell you everything
That was wrong. I tried
To get over everything
That happened between us,
Yet you saw fit to act
Like nothing was wrong.
We had our heart to heart
A couple days ago, remember?
You said to try and be happy,
To remember the good times.
Well, guess what?
You told me to be happy...

Jason, this is so so sad but so beautifully written. The story you tell of such heartache is one that many can relate to and so often it ends in disaster.

    Great write,
    all the best, Em
