2016: a year of death

by deeplydesturbed   Jul 15, 2016

A special day, July 14th.
A day of fun and celebration,
fireworks, and a whole day off...
the unity of an entire nation.

... every year without a hitch,
since July 14th, 1970;
however, this year was different.
a tragic end to a day remembering serenity.

They slaughtered innocent people,
ran them down in a white truck;
left them for dead on the road,
In the minds of families, the image is stuck.

What gave you the right to choose this day
to destroy the lives of families?
Why attack this jubilant city of love,
with a vehicle full of grenades and guns?

Now the world mourns yet again;
another loss of many lives.
Twenty sixteen is a year full of death
that will just go into the world's archives.

with thanks to a very special S for all his help :) I appreciate it..

    Nothing has come to stay, than truth. Against all odds, victory abounds.

    I think you should change the exclamation after truck to a semi-colon. Just not something you exclaim, not in a poem, especially a somber one as this is. Then the line after, the "Left them" will be a lowercase L; to be as such:

    ran them down in a white truck;
    left them for dead on the road.

    Also, I suggest changing the word "in" to "into" in the last line. It will help with the flow for the last line.

    My heart continuously aches for the victims of senseless violence. We all try our best to remember the victims, but the point is their precious lives have been cut short, and for what?

    I just can't fathom the violence of today, and putting into perspective I can't imagine how it must have been in the 1940s after the Holocaust. Look at what happened after those 6 million people were murdered. Just a few mentions in the History books and the world goes right back to where it was before, with a few taboo pieces (swastika, the name Hitler) ...

    I just want an end to the violence, and though this poem won't solve the world, it came from a good place in your heart that I wish more people had.

    Words don't do justice to this world's growing list of mindless terror, but you do a damn good job of trying here.

    Well done.
