Thirteen Steps

by Wayne Gates   Aug 20, 2016

Thirteen steps
Thirteen steps up to my room and
this doesn't sound like much
but it has become all consuming
I have to go up them to go to bed
I stand there at the bottom
and I look up with dread
My breathing has become labored
because cigarettes
was the condiment I favored
I am now being assaulted by COPD
It snuck up from behind
and has taken control over me
The invincibility of youth
came to a crashing conclusion
When I heard there is no cure,
no quick fix, no solution
So I struggle up the steps
hanging on to the railing tight
knowing that come one day
I am going to lose this fight

Your poems always give me a message... I admire the courage to move on despite the fear of the troubles being faced (fear has been conquered). Thumb up 4 u!

Wayne, this really hit home for me as my Dad suffers from this condition too.
A great piece with a great message.
    All the best, Em

An interesting poem I almost felt like a bit of a rap. Could do with splitting up into stanzas (verses) but overall very good Milly xx

I know it is not very polished. It mostly was about the message. I write about what bothers me. I am working on coming to grips with my condition. Thanks for the input.
