Halloween

by Le Prince de Monte Cristo

Halloween

The day runs fast away from the devilish night
The hare rushes to its den, the cats fight

The chill of the night falls on the child's shoulders
The diamonds, fallen from the moon, reflect in the river

The wind blows the sun's last candle; the garden gate screeches
The sky turns yellow- red like some shiny peaches

The oak trees take the shape of some fiery monsters
They grow long arms equipped with vicious pincers

On the hill, left alone, Solitude abandons the scarecrow
Afar in the bushes, scary eyes of the night, the worms glow

The windows twinkle like tiny burning stars
The ghostly dark shadows fall on the poplars

Mysteriously, above the roofs, some grey cotton flies.
Through the air, almost silent, the eagle glides.

Nocturnal, awaken, the bat witches the forest.
The sorcerer prepares his horrific potion

The child shivers. The child panics, nature screams!
Gently Mummy kisses his forehead; the child dreams.
