Emmanuel

by Poet on the Piano   Dec 22, 2013

We are trained to question, always question
in order to analyze the needs they walk in with.
Do you realize that it's only four days away?
Wouldn't this be the perfect stocking size?
Do you need any more to complete the set?

Christmas is coming. Though it barely looks
like Christmas or feels like it with the spring
rain and fresh air.

Maybe I am not prepared for I still can't seem
to release myself to others. I either hide or
lean on a smile that is warm but doesn't
elaborate with words.

I have forgotten the bows, boxes, presents,
dollar bills, yet that is alright. There is more.
I know there must be more. More to this than
asking the question, are you done shopping yet?
No? Then let me deliver you from any worry.
We have nothing but the best for your checkbook.

My heart has grown weary of the too bright
lighting, the museum cubes of daily deals,
the chirp of a credit card being swiped,
the cheery red we wear to inspire holiday spirit.

Just stop.
Listen to this rain, remember the snow from
days ago. Stop in your tracks and let Christmas
pass into your soul. Don't be fooled by the
coupons or bulletins you have received that
explain how to take advantage of this time
of year by saving.

No, we have already been saved. Maybe
we are aware, maybe we are not,
but there is more than decorations and
wrapping and cooking for that single day.
There is a holiness that is inside all of us,
given by one who walked on earth
to free us from sin two thousands years ago.

Tomorrow is the last Sunday of Advent,
the last we will sing before our hymns turn
to Joy to the World and O Come All Ye Faithful.

And as the storm slows my thoughts down,
I hear
"Emmanuel, may God be with us."
