    Round One Poems

    *************************************
1 Hey There Lonely Girl (Eddie Holman)

Standing alone at the graveside today
    flowers forgotten in my hand
    hoping, somehow by coming here
    that I would understand,

Why the lord has taken my husband away
    and left me all alone
did he need him more than I did?
did he want him for his own?

I cried out loud, but no one heard,
"Lord why have you taken him from me
you already have our still-born twins
and now you have all three".

They shared the same small coffin
and holding hands they both did lie
no breath was taken into their lungs
Dear God, why did you let them die?

The wind it wails and so do I
    for I still don't understand
why He's taken all my family
and left me on this land?

Laying the flowers on the grave
    their petals white as snow
I pray and talk to my love a while
for there's no where else to go.

"Please look after them dear lord
for I loved them, yes all three
they were very special in my life
and were very dear to me."

As the cold wind numbs my bones
I finally accept that you are dead
and these cruel words come to me
    replaying over in my head.

I'm this lonely girl, lonely girl
my broken heart will never feel like new
I'm this lonely girl, lonely girl
Oh so sad because she misses you.

2 I Can See Clearly Now (Johnny Nash)

It was just a holiday romance
clearly, I can see that now

    still...

when I hear the drizzle of the rain
bringing back memories as it falls
    seems it's whispering my name
as once more, your voice it calls.

In the shelter of my mind
through the window of my eyes
memories once more come drifting back
to when we said our last goodbye.

    A mind distracted and confused
my thoughts are many miles away
and, when I lie alone at night,
my dreams again begin to stray.

The verse I write is left undone
don't know why I spend my time
    writing poems I don't believe
    with words that barely rhyme

and, so you see, I've come to doubt
all that I once held as true
I loved and lost, or so it seems
a world now empty without you.

    Upon my window raindrops weave
they merge together then drift apart
a transient love not mean to be
guess I knew that from the start.

3 Midnight at the Oasis (Maria Muldaur)

She reads the text for the 10th time:
    "Room 18."
    This is the last one.
    Tonight will be different.
    But... will it, really?

She stares at the neon signs.
    Bright green palm trees
    and flashing, stuttering words:
    "O-sis Motel"
    "Oasis Motel"
    O-sis,
    Oasis,
    O-sis.

    Two knocks,
    the door opens
    and the stagnant air
    instantly chokes her.

    She steps into the squalid,
    uninviting room and he
    takes her by the wrist.

Bed springs dig into her spine,
    but her mind strays
    to a different place.

A place with real palm trees
    and crystalline waters
that quench her desire for something more.

Still she feels his clammy hands
    wrap around her throat.
He likes it this way, but
    tonight something is different.

    He breathes in ecstasy
    and the mirage fades
    into darkness.
    The palm trees flicker
in and out of her vision-
    welcoming a different paradise.

4 More than a Feeling (Boston)

    Across the vast seas
a bridge was built by you and me
with more than a feeling or two,
    without asking for any fee
    just dreams to agree
    life grew into a thriving tree;

    With you as my days
    to set the moon ablaze
more than a feeling comes to lay,
I never knew a bond can raise
    two distant hearts to stay
    forever this way
with more than a feeling or two!

    *************************************
    5 Slippin' into Darkness (War)

    She was falling in love
    s l o w l y but surely
    though had to stop
    but it was difficult

    How could she??

    it took her by surprise
    and gripped her like
    never before but things
    rarely lasted as she
    was riddled with doom

    and she felt herself
    slipping into darkness

    Again....

6 Smiling Faces Sometimes (the Undisputed Truth)

Overlooking wrath & chuckles of sins..
    Dressed in powdered chili
and black spices, their burning eyes,
and itching tears, think some pain
could ease their fears. Smiling faces,
    sometimes you know
think they come against their will
as though they fell from the devil’s door.
    Smiling faces sometimes don’t know
they’re of need, guilt-grins and more.
I can see their souls struggling,
there’s no comfort, there's no healing.
Smiling faces think teeth don’t show
how their misery ate the ceiling.
I can see their energy waning,
their prayers turned to ash & dust
stuck like dirt on their knees.
    Those faces, always know,
they smile in plead for joy & peace.

    *************************************
7 Take it Easy (the Eagles)

Well I'm a halfway 'round the world
An just thinkin' of my girls
    Deployed for nine months oversea
Things aint goin' well with their mother
But at least I have my brothers
To help me keep ahold of sanity

    Breathe

In seven weeks I'm headin' home
And I might well be alone
I find its gettin' harder to breathe
Spent a decade of my life
Being lied to by my wife
An I think its prob'ly time to leave

    Breathe

Gears in my head keep on turnin'
An I think I smell 'em burnin'
'Cause I refuse to walk away in defeat
My pen is ventin' my agressions
With head bowed to life's hard lessons
With "Take It Easy" bein' played on REPEAT.

8 The Ghost Song (The Doors)

    Restless spirit left behind
seeking a love she cannot find
    melodic whispers o'er desert plain
in ghostly song she calls my name

"Where are you, wichasa mithawa ?
come save me from a life of wochantesica."

    Haunting words from my past
    secrets buried in desert vast
a tribe wiped out on this sad day
one soul left wandering in dismay.

Winyan mithawa in my arms lying
all around family dead or dying
her final words "I'll wait for you,
    Thehila, (I love you)".

    Returning now to Dawn's Highway
    searching the ghost of Hesapa
my angel bride with no wings
    melancholy words still she sings

"With the rising of Wi Hinaph A,
    help me find wochantewaste".

I've come to find you angel dear
for you have haunted my living years
Now in death, our spirits entwine
I've come home to make you mine.

Two souls once joined in holy marriage
before one died in bloody carnage
    will now forever be together
as they depart this earth for Mahpiya.

Wind still whispers o'er desert plain
    ghostly melody never heard again.

9 Walking in Rhythm (the Blackbyrds)

Till I Don't Trip and Fall

    Everyday,
I usually walk in rhythm with my thoughts
while getting lost in obscure alleys of ideas.
Sometimes, I trip over pot holes of contradictions,
and I find myself laying on a ground
while staring at the moon of reason,
Then, somehow, I manage to stand up,
and find my way towards the home
    where these thoughts were born

From there, the walking in rhythm with these thoughts
    Continues on and on...

10 What a Fool Believes (the Doobie Brothers)

    What a fool believes
    Is sad,
    But true
    It's probably happened
    To some of you.

    It's the same old story
    You fall in love
    Every love song
    You have memory of
    Is you and him
    Forever...real
    That's just the way
    They make
    You feel.

    Boy has big dreams
    He's working for
He has a girl he loves,
    Why would he need more?

    What a fool believes
    As he leaves.
    As she's watching him go
    It was all for them.
    Someday she'd know.

He hits it big and starts to win,
    He begs her to wait,
    He'll be back again.
    They believe,
    He actually will
    It won't be long and
    He loves her still,

    The crowds go crazy
    They love his voice..
    He isn't lazy
    He makes the choice
    That fool believed
    (he could have it all)

    Now here's the scene,
    She's standing at the checkout
    And sees the magazine
    Get the heck out
    He's with someone not me
Why was I a fool who
    Couldn't see?

    What a fool believed
    Is eventually
That cafe meet just had to be
Because back in the day he
    Loved her so and
    She would get the chance
    To let him know
    ...
    What she believed..

No wise man has the power
    To reason away
    The love given up
    Back in the day.
What a fool believes is sad,
    But true?
    I'm sure it happened
    To some of you...

11 Your Mama Don't Dance (Loggins & Messina)

    Your mamma don't dance,
But trust me she can move.
She may not glide across the floor
But on my silk sheets she's smooth.

You may not see her foxtrot,
How could she in those heels.
But the legs that stand above then
Can make men rock and reel.

You see, you are still a whippet
And you think you know it all.
But your momma is still a fox
She's done things you'll never know.

All the things you think original.
We did em all before you.
    We didn't play computers.
    But sometimes we dodged school.

So yes we dreamed and danced,
    And sometimes we still do,
    We can't ignore the music
Without it there'd be no you.

    We may be getting older
A little grey upon our heads,
But I promise you this my child.
    We certainly ain't dead.

And ya mamma can bloody dance.
