One To Celebrate, Two To Drown

by Ben Pickard   Jul 8, 2018

I will never know
why the north wind picked up the pieces of our love
and decided to freeze.

The windows in the home we shared are translucent now
and the light is crooked by the time it reaches me.

The clock ticks,
but my life is perpetually frozen in time
and every promise we made still resounds with the gongs
of our accursed wedding bells.

I was counting on forever, but now - right now -is all there is,
and I only ever see you in my dreams when you leave me
and again
and again.

I have tried to feed the flames the last fragments of our doomed union,
but they never die - and the heat is burning me!

I will raise a glass to all we had and I will raise two to all we lost
and I hope the empty bottles that I drown in
wash up on the beach you now sit upon,
wherever that is and wherever you are.

I dont drink, but several years ago, I was suffering from heart break and one night I drank a bottle of rum... while writing poetry and needless to say I didn't post what was written and I never will... awful stuff (the drink and the poems lol)
but I relate to this piece and its very powerful!
