"If anyone here knows a reason..."

by Ben Pickard   Nov 25, 2019

The organ collapsed
as I declared my love for you.
And now, its buckled pipes
and broken melodies
are all that remain
of a marriage that shattered
before we could even say

"I do".

Love this Ben. A love that never quite got off the ground. Very relatable, beautifully done-

I’m glad I cannot relate to the poem. Though I’ve seen so many soap operas where it has happened. It’s good when that happens if it was an arrange marriage where both parties didn’t want to marry but not great when one party wanted to. :(
    Thanks for sharing.

In essence, the organ is the metaphor and I think could’ve possibly been more subtle, but the short, stark nature of the poem means it doesn’t suffer as a result. I would nitpick a little in that your verb use could’ve been more specific because as much as I love ‘buckled’, ‘broken’ and ‘shattered’ don’t carry as much weight? I think the title choice is great though, and I’m sure it’s a poem many can unfortunately relate to.

Nice to read your work again :)

reminds me of a first love that was so powerful, that the world stopped at first kiss, and for whatever reason it never made it to the alter.. the organ started to play but it just never happened. I can relate to this and all this week I have (for whatever reason) been thinking about that past event happening to me... its gut wrenching even after all this time.. its a moment you never forget and I thank you for sharing this.. very powerful Ben my sweet <3

I'm so sorry to hear about that, Maple. Those darn first loves just never leave you, do they?
