This election is insane, just like this entire year has been. Ben, I love your poetry, always have and this poem just screams the entire truth of it all. Right now, Im seriously focused on the better of the horrible duo.. Trump has got to go. In the end people will continue to suffer and it just breaks my heart.
Excellent poem, Dad!
I especially enjoy the lines:
Or what of the names that have failed and left,
Leaving electorates alone and bereft
Of hope that was promised - of dawn's that would break-
I'm damned if I'm buying their dreams while awake.
Not Representative is the perfect title for this. A brilliant political poem!
Well-written! You raise some extremely important points.
I'm ashamed to say, I didn't vote in my early 20s, because I believed choosing the lesser evil was still choosing evil. These past few years changed everything. I had it explained to me that it is quite normal to have a distrust in the system, and to be discouraged to vote because of the choices, but choosing the lesser evil who we're not really excited about will possibly pave the way for a future candidate that we may actually LOVE. And most likely, I may not see any change no matter who wins, but a lot of people will. I'm voting for their future too, not just mine. No one I know is that happy with Biden, but the alternative is even scarier. I also believe we need to hold every single politician accountable, continuously. It really is quite frustrating that we're basically forced to choose between two parties, but don't think that will change anytime soon. We're pigeonholed in that sense, and while I used to support third parties, I know feel on some level that it is a wasted vote. Which is a shame in the grand scheme of things, that we really don't have as much choice as we believe.
It's also interesting, living in a somewhat rural part of Indiana, that many people here are VERY vocal about Trump because they feel he represents them. There's a lot of farmers here too. They focus so much on the economy that other aspects are forgotten. It's been incredibly telling this year what has become a deal-breaker or not with people. While we need to keep in mind the actions of other politicians, and how much power they have, I feel people have become more comfortable with prejudiced and unkind comments because of Trump's presence and what he puts out into the world.
Anyway, a piece with a lot of truth. It is incredibly disheartening that we still hope for change that may never come, but I feel it's all some of us have left. The feeling of being helpless is the worst though, and there's so much we cannot affect on a nationwide level, yet can focus on locally perhaps.
Thanks so much for this, MA, and giving me something to chew over, as ever.
I absolutely agree about the third party vote - I used to feel the same, but you are right, it is just a wasted vote, unfortunately. And how can we possibly live in a democracy when all the choice we really have is between two candidates or parties as is the case in the UK who are often similar anyway? And the two big parties are the ones with funds behind them and when there are funds, there is coruption, greed and often a desperate need to be famous and go down in history above all else - helping the people and doing the right thing too often comes second to these politicians.
You are right though to perhaps not give up entirely. Maybe - just maybe - a really good, honest and decent person will come forward and be the president you people deserve but I am nothing if not cynical, not least because I feel the kind of drive and tenacity required to get to those heights is not representative of the majority, and so how can it represent their wishes and goals? It too often is coupled with a bulldozer, bullying mentality that stops at nothing to get to wherever it wants to go.

I proudly voted green party. But to each their own. :)
I love this so much, I won't comment on the politics because I won't shut up. . . . However, the way this is written, connotation, speed etc reminds me of spoken word poetry (ment as a compliment) I especially like the way you "stretched the bars" (if it was a piece of music) I really like the actual content of the poem but HOW you've written this is truely great! Wonderful.
