The Phoenix

by Mimi   Nov 22, 2020

There once was a lovely bird
She had extravagant wings,
A quick wit, and a kind heart
Among other things
But although she seemed bold
She hid secrets inside
She didn't feel beautiful
And she was convinced that others lied
One day she caught
The eye of another
They began to grow close
And he never was bothered
By the things that worried her
And the dark parts of her heart
He ignored the cracks and bruised
He loved all her broken parts
And although he tried
To make her feel safe
In the end, it was he
Who made her heart break
She had begun to lose her color
And every now and then a feather would fall
He began to see just how broken she was
So he left her crumpled against a wall
She was crushed by his betrayal
And she was convinced she couldn't go on
But she didn't realize the pain she faced
Would only help her to move on
Because he hurt her
She was able to shed her old skin
And although she caught fire and burned
She faced it with a grin
She rose brighter than ever
And no one could hold her back
Because in the end
He couldn't turn her heart black

I love how you've used a phoenix and its life cycle to represent your friend. It's a smooth poem from start to finish. Excellent.
