That Maid Of The Mountain

by Rab   Sep 10, 2022

I saw her one morning – oh how I remember
As she walked through the heather - o’er meadow of green
The flowers did bow – and the birds were all singing
For that maid of the mountain - that no one had seen

The sunlight reflected - her grace and her splendor
The form of her beauty – a wonder to see
And I lost my heart - to that maid of the mountain
A love that was born – and forever to be

I called from the hill – on the wind that was blowing
A wind that had traveled - o’er land and o’er sea
I prayed beyond hope - for that maid of the mountain
To hear the wind calling – and turn round to me

In the beat of a heart – in a moment so fleeting
She turned and her gaze - met the love from my eye
That moment was frozen - for ever in my memory
And remained in my heart – till the day that I died

As I ran from the hill – to be near to that maiden
I found myself walking - o’er meadow of green
But the flowers did not bow – and the birds were not singing
That maid of the mountain – had gone far from me

Can true love be so strong – can true love last forever
Can it grow in the heart – to a love that’s ne’r been
Or will it just fade - to become but a memory
Of that maid of the mountain – that no one had seen

The years they rolled on – my steps were less fleeting
My hair turned to silver – my eyes could not see
But true love kept me young – and my heart was still beating
For that maid of the mountain – who I loved endlessly

As I lay on my bed – when death it came calling
Although I was blind – in one moment I seen
That true love is so strong – and true love lasts forever
That maid of the mountain – she still was my queen

Now as I pass from this world – to the land of forever
I find myself walking - where I prayed I would be
Yes the flowers they bow – and the birds are all singing
That maid of the mountain – is coming to me
