If I Stop To Remember

by Ink   Apr 11, 2023

I have scar tissue
that spells her name,
Its valleys and peaks
landscape my core
and if I stop too long,
I'd spend a lifetime
hiking through them.

Each tree a scent
each blade of grass a memory
and the great plateau
where we parted ways
dominates all.

When sorrow dances in my bones
instinctively I move to its rhythm,
regardless if I want to or not.

From start to end an emotional journey of loss/parting and no matter how much you would like to forget, remembering those moments gives a painful comfort. I also like the fact this poem has emotion and nature mixed together...touching write..

Hello Meena, thank you so much for such a lovely comment I'm glad you appreciated my scribbles, for the most part I find it almost impossible to separate love from nature, "painful comfort" is definitely it in a nut shell. Kindest regards Ink.

There is such incredible emotion in this. The first four lines have to be my favorite, as I really like the choice to use "landscape" as a verb, and the flow throughout is great. I also relate to the last few lines, and feel like it is easy to sometimes keep that sorrow close. There can be a comfort in remembering, even through the pain, and it can be even harder to just break away from it and act like that part of our life never mattered... when it usually did make an impact.
