Superhero

by Amanda Bee   May 18, 2005

From the outside he looks rather ordinary
It took a while for me to truely know
That my daddy well, he has this little secret
He’s a genuine superhero

He led us to believe that he was a simple man
Leading a simple man’s life
Three children he raised with great pride
A nice house, a reliable car, a lovely wife

But he’s never had me fooled for a minute
With that ‘badge’ and that ‘police officer’ profession
Of course, he must keep his true identity a secret
So I know I’ll never get an honest confession

“Daddy’s home!” he would yell as he’d come through the door
Home from a long day, (of world saving, no doubt)
As he’d lift me onto his shoulders, I’d get a peek near his belt
Sometimes catching a glance of his cape peeping out

While other kids’ fathers were doctors and lawyers
I always knew mine was different inside
“My daddy’s a superhero,” I’d brag, to my friends
Puffing out my chest with unconcealed pride

I’m positive he can leap tall buildings in a single bound
I’m sure he’s helped thousands of people in despair
And though he has denied it to me over a hundred times
I’m willing to bet he can fly through the air

Yet his super human display of love and affection
Are the most amazing of his powers, if you ask me
The way he never hesitates to take time out for his children
And his enduring devotion to the welfare of his family

Through God’s grace he has always been able to protect us
From so much of the bad in this world
Always finding a way to shelter us from danger
He makes me so proud to call myself a daddy’s girl

So say what you will about Superman’s strength
Or those fascinating webs that Spiderman throws
But to me, they all pale in comparison to daddy
For he will always be my one and only superhero
