The Pros and Cons of Silence

by Kelsie   Jun 16, 2006

"Silence."
The room fell quiet
The sticky September air filled with a sudden chill.
The hairs on my arms rose,
Tears jetted out of my swollen, red eyes.
She carried a suite case, clutching it to her chest
like a mother holds her newborn child
How she held me, when I was a baby.
Her baby.

I remember seeing her pull away
The sun reflecting off the rear of the old maroon van.
Seeing her pull away, carrying my childhood away with her
Tightly tucked inside her suitcases
Awaiting a chance to immerge,
And enter the life of another little girl.
Another little girl like me.

Remembering the hug, the goodbye,
The little smile on her face as she drove away
My eyes full of tears
screaming "Mommy, please come back!"
She drove past the pine trees
She drove onto the steaming asphalt road
And soon, she was gone.

A million miles away now.
Four year and not a single time
Have I seen her since that night
She moved a million miles away,
Choosing a fat plumber, over me.

I'm not sure when the sun stopped shining;
When Daylight gave up its eternal battle with Night.
I don't remember what it's like
To kiss my mommy goodnight
