If a chain is no stronger than its weakest link

by Espoirfailed   Nov 1, 2007

If a chain is no stronger than its weakest link,
It's high time we parted, don't you think?
Because I've been sitting here trying to fix things all night,
And you can't fix what has more wrongs than rights.

All that glitters is not gold,
But like a fool I was sold long before this proverb popped into my head,
Just like the ones hidden in the stories my mother used to read to me,
before I went to bed.
And your mother's always right,
Even when she needs two whiskeys to get her through the night.

I know first hand that bad news travels fast,
And that people's empty promises never last.
Long lost Joan's crawl out the woodwork and they swear they'll do anything,
And you can tell them everything.
And they do nothing.
But at least fill them in on all the gossip,
Because all the world loves a lover,
But they love a mourner more.
They swear it was your dad that they saw before they went to sleep,
And if they turn up at the funeral and weep,
They know they've done their bit.

Some people make me sick.
But after all blood is thicker than water,
And they tell me I'm his brave, brave daughter.
I ask them if they know my name,
They smile and say it's better to have died with honour than have lived with shame.
That's a "no" then.

It's said that dead men have no friends,
At least not after a couple of weeks,
So I suppose it's where this ends.
But, Dad, I won't forget. And it really is you I see before I sleep.
I suppose it's where this ends
Because dead men have no friends.
I can't believe this is the end.
