For Those Who Left This World Way Too Soon

by Maria   Jul 22, 2014

Caleb, I think that you should have stayed.
You thought nobody liked you,
but remember your crush from grade 6?
She still has a crush on you.

Anna, your children miss you
and wonder what they did wrong
and why you chose to leave them.

Jeffrey, the fact that you were gay
didn't stop your family and friends
from loving you unconditionally.

Jessica, maybe you shouldn't have given up
so early because your parents
would have never given up on you
no matter what you did.

Lauren, you should have waited
because your wish would eventually
come true.
Too bad you're not here to see that.

Daniel, love always finds its way
no matter what obstacles may appear.
If you had lived instead,
you'd agree with me.

Daphne, you should see your little sister,
she insists she's going to be a psycologist
when she grows up.
She wants to help other people
because she couldn't help you.

Sophie, he wasn't worth it
and everybody finally understood
he was lying about you.
They now know you're not a scum.

Chad, having parents that
are addicted to drugs
shouldn't have dictated your future
which I'm sure would have been bright.

Billy, you were not fat.
You were definitely not a fag*ot.
Just a big-hearted and kind boy.

Marilyn, there was absolutely
nothing wrong with you.
The bullies were only jealous of you
because you were a genius.

Jimmy, you were only 10 years old.
You had every reason to live
and so much to see and experience.

Jenny, your dad had a mental illness.
Why did you ever think
you were the one to blame?
There was nothing you could've done
to help him.

Faith, being short is not a problem,
it's not a flaw.
You were good enough
and pretty, and sweet and great.

Tom, you were NEVER a loser.
If you hadn't let them bring you down,
you would be able to see
your wonderful daughter grow up.

Alex, we all make mistakes
and we all act stupid when we're teens.
Your father is not mad at you, whatsoever.

Penelope, why did you ever think
suicide is the only option?
Being pregnant is a blessing,
not something to be ashamed of.

James, your mother has fallen apart.
She doesn't believe in God anymore
and nothing will make her happy again.

Cameron, it was not your fault
that he died.
I know you did your best but
you couldn't have done anything
to save him.

Stacey, he was a player
and a total jerk
but that didn't mean no one
would ever fall in love with you.

Nick, your girlfriend forgave you
the moment you apologized to her.
Everything would have been different
had you just stayed.

Melissa, looks are not everything.
Your future husband would have
taught you that.

Tyler, you should have stayed here,
with me, with all your family.
With you, you took my life as well
and now, I'm left with only a few memories
to keep me going.

Please, whatever you're going through,
wait and it will all go away one day.
And if it seems like that day will never come,
ask for help, make them hear you,
let somebody know how you feel.
Giving up is never an option
and suicide is definitely not the answer.

What an emotional poem this is. I have been affected by suicide and this poem really spoke to me. I think the idea you have used, by creating a list of different situations, is quite a creative way to grab attention at how often suicide takes part in this world.

I like how you gave the simple little stanzas, yet they hold so much because each one shows us why another helpless soul left this world. And you showed them how it might have been different.

I really like the part when you say " looks were not everything, but the future husband would have showed her that" - what a powerful message. It gives off the impression that she felt unable to find love, or to consider that she could be lovable. How sad.

This poem really touched me, and I feel passionate about issues like this being raised, and written about. So thank you for writing and sharing.

Thank you very much for your comment, it really moved me because I have been suicidal myself but I'm in recovery and I wanted to share my point of view and my experiences on the matter.

I'm really glad you liked the poem and I hope I managed to raise awareness in some way.
