The Melancholy Life of P

by roma   Apr 10, 2015

In the land where love was selfish,
lived a boy under the big old tree.
disappointed with life, he just sat in shade..
and watched the people who came to see the tree.

On a rainy day, he saw something..
a girl so pretty, that he couldn't stop staring.
It took him a little time to stop staring
and realize that the girl was helpless
and getting wet in the rain.

She was abandoned by someone who left for greater glory..
With a big heart, the boy provided her shelter,
gave her some fruits to eat..
the girl so pretty, became happy and thanked god for sending help.

They stayed up all night talking and playing..
She showed him how to make a small fort made of stones..
but happiness never lasts too long..
The sun came out and everything was bright again..

Before the boy could realize it, the girl thanked him for helping
took his favorite umbrella and left with a promise that she'd come back.
but only to return what she took.

the boy was sad and lonely again..
for days he cried and wept over loneliness.
then he saw something, the fort she had made with round little stones.
An idea struck him, he wiped his tears,
and for a change he did something productive..

he built a fort almost as tall as the tree was..
almost as pretty as the girl was..
and almost as strong as his feelings were.
He then lived in peace inside the castle which he built around the tree
and forgot about the girl who he thought would never come back.
But then she came back..

Because happiness never lasts too long.
She came back to return what she took..
stayed with the boy in his fort for a week or so..
again they stayed up every night talking and playing..
this time the boy told the girl about how he felt
and that he'd want her to stay with him in the lovely castle..

smile disappeared from the girl's face..
she was eating an apple which she threw away..
she told him that she had been waiting for her love which she hopes would return anytime soon.
while leaving the boy again, she advised him to stay happy and to make the best of whatever he had.
what now the boy did is what you'd call "acting upon the words".

He again somehow mustered the strength to wipe his tears and move on..
he picked up the half eaten apple that she threw away..
took out the seeds and sowed them along the fort walls.
In no time there stood a row full of apple trees which surrounded the fort thus enhancing the beauty.
more and more people came to enjoy the beauty.

Time passed like how they show in movies and the boy became a man..
his face heavy, hands so rough and eyes.. such that you could guess the man's story in a glance.
He couldn't forget the girl who by now would have become the prettiest lady that ever lived..
more days passed and time went by.. he just took care of what he'd built in her memory.
Then one day a letter came, from the girl that he loved. He couldn't believe that she still remembered him..
She wrote that she missed him and that she'd be visiting soon..
For the first time in years that I didn't write about, his eyes lit up, with hope, with love and with thoughts that maybe she loved him.
He just couldn't wait any longer.. days became long. Even longer than the lines I am writing now.

And then she finally came!
He had decorated the fort with lights and flowers.. the trees he planted were filled with fruits.
In short, everything was pointing towards a happy ending.. He was happy!
But again I'll say it, though I don't like to..
that happiness never last too long.

The girl came back.. She was now a tall, pretty woman with a hat on her head.. walking towards the castle
but also, there was someone else beside her..
A man.. taller, smarter and more masculine the boy could have ever been..
He was holding her hand..
actually i should say.. they were holding each others hand..
this would better justify and reflect the pain the boy had felt on seeing this.

They entered the castle very excited.. on seeing the lovely trees and stuff.
The girl came up to the boy and gave him a hug..
The boy.. broken and shattered, still had to offer his guests food and shelter for the night..
They sat on the terrace and talked at night about things..
The man she loved told his stories of how he found glory..

The boy.. our boy.. least interested in his talks, broke out and asked them what they wanted now..
The girl took the initiative.. she held the boy's hand and told him their story..
The story is not important here.. the important thing is what she asked him for..
She asked him for a last favor..
the castle!

Can you believe it?? They had asked him to give up what he had built with his bare hands..
they asked him to give up the only thing he had, the thing in which all his memories resided..
Shocked and disgusted, the boy stood up..
he wanted to yell, scream at them..
but after all, he did build the fort in her memory only..

So instead, he put a false smile on his face.. to show that all was okay..
he handed the keys to the couple and moved a couple steps away..
He turned his back to the woman he loved..
thought of her smile that he remembered from the day when it rained.. the rainy day..
And then without another word, he took another step away..
and that's it.

The couple lived happily ever after.
