8000 kilometers

by Yakari Gabriel   Aug 18, 2015

I am overseas now.
in the plane, at some point
the altitude was 11 thousand meters,
and it made my ears ache with hope

never had I been afraid of leaving,
its what I wanted and what I needed
I once told you that one day,
you would not be able to use
me as a punching bag.
I done told you that I would flee,
that I would fly, that I would soar

and you laughed,
when I told you in a month-
you said "can't you make it a week?"
and everyone called me the bad child,
and you agreed
and you helped them say it
and it became my reality
ain't no one stepped up
to tell you it was killing me
ain't no one ever considered
that I was too broken to clap back

now my words have manifested.
I am an estimated 8000 kilometers away
from your voice. but at night I can still
hear you scream and ridiculing my hair
I can hear you talk about how bad I am

when I finally call,
you are upset, call me bad again
you tell me to take care. you say
"God bless you". 8000 kilometers between
us, and the irony of it all
can still find its way to me.
