A report that appeared yesterday in the online edition of El Mundo, a Madrid newpaper, was the original source for news indicating that this island may have disappeared. El Mundo is now reporting Haiti's casualties from Hurricane Jeanne as 600 confirmed dead, 1,000 missing, of whom most are likely to be dead, and 384 wounded.

I didn't see any correction on the earlier report but it conflicts with what they are now reporting.

Haiti's death toll is certain to rise. Most parts of the country have become inaccessible, so it is difficult to assess all the flood damage. There are also fears over the spread of infectious diseases from contamination in the wake of the flooding.
