A Great Aunt's Comfort

by Maple Tree   Jun 14, 2015

Her eyes were blue-

I knew this from the pain,
pouring and overflowing
from her tea cup.

My Russian, Great Aunt Elsie;

Blessed be the woman who
released the chains that weighted
my soul.

Kneeling at my side in a whisper,
she spoke to me of what it truly
means to be a wiccan servant of
nature.

I was not a freak-

Before her visit I hid
silently within trees
while children threw
rocks in my direction.

Ignorance marked me
for a devil,
disguised in pig-tails
and ruby red sneakers.

She envisioned me to do great
things with the gifts my
ancestors granted me
and I was ashamed
before her rescue and
resurrection of my sanity.

I bore a mark
upon my right side,
of where violence
tried to smother my
soul.

Laying her sweet hand
upon my chest,
she released the darkness
and for the first time in my life,
I felt beautiful.

"Always be who you were meant to be,
my sweet little Wanetki"

Her name for me brings forth
such comfort in times of darkness
within the trees, but within darkness
there is always light-
and of course Aunt Elsie....

As always - this poem was so personal to you, and so moving to read. You really put in so much emotion but also showed us who this person was, and what they meant to you and how they made you feel so special and important, and most of all, understood.

The wording is perfect, they layout works for the poem.

The tone of the poem was so hopeful too, it is like she shared with you her thoughts about you and wanted to show you how beautiful you are, and to always be who you are, and then you are now writing this poem for others to know that they should be themselves too, and they are perfect the way they are.

I really liked how you created the little scene of her releasing all of the darkness from you, that was so powerful.

Really good job for the contest, and you sure did keep it to the prompt.

    Beautiful poem! xx
