Indentation

So this is it, we've reached the end
We're calling time on us
Is it possible to extract ourselves
With a minimum of fuss?

Can we agree to a dignified end
Devoid of blame or regret
Can we learn from what went wrong
Can we be free from emotional debt?

My ring has been removed now
But its indentation tells the tale
I may as well wear a sign that says:
"Divorce imminent! Marriage fail!"

I want to return to who I was
Before you and I became 'we'
Who I was before I was claimed
Before you tried to change me

Trickling back into myself
I'll reuse my forgotten name
I'll exhale fully as I haven't for years
And I'll start to feel again

So you can have this and I'll have that
We'll split what we once shared
We'll start again in some place new
And try to forget that we cared

But for now the indentation mocks
I want it to be smooth
I long for my new beginning
I deserve a love that's true.
